“I’m fine” is not the full story of living in the Netherlands
Over the past few months, we’ve been hosting small gatherings at Flux Forward. Small groups, simple conversations. Just a space where people could share what’s actually going on.
Nothing formal. No pressure. Just people talking honestly about their experience of living here. And something kept coming up again and again: “I’m fine, just a bit tired.” You hear this a lot. Maybe you’ve said it yourself.
On the surface, it makes sense. Nothing is really wrong. You have a place to live, you’re working or studying, things are moving. From the outside, it looks like you’re doing well.
But if you stay with that sentence for a moment, there’s usually more behind it.
Life here isn’t just about one thing being difficult. It’s the combination of many small things happening at the same time. You’re constantly adjusting to how things work. You’re trying to understand systems that are new to you. You’re making decisions without always feeling fully sure. And at the same time, you’re thinking ahead about your job, your contract, your housing, your next step.
None of this is dramatic on its own. But it doesn’t really stop either. It sits in the background and follows you through your day.
You might notice it in small moments. Rethinking a conversation. Wondering if you said the right thing. Trying to read between the lines in a culture that still feels slightly unfamiliar. It takes energy, even if you don’t always realize it.
So instead of saying “I’m overwhelmed,” you say, “I’m fine, just a bit tired.”
But this kind of tired is not just about sleep. It’s more like a constant mental load. The effort of adapting, figuring things out, and trying to move forward at the same time.
And at some point, it becomes easy to turn it inward. To think you should be faster, more settled, more clear by now. That you’re somehow behind.
But what if that’s not the full picture?
What if the issue is not that you’re doing something wrong, but that you’re carrying more than it seems on the surface?
This is something we’ve been hearing again and again from internationals living in the Netherlands. People who are doing everything right, but still feel like something is off.
There isn’t a quick fix for this. But putting words to it already changes something. It makes it easier to see that you’re not the only one experiencing it, and that it’s part of a bigger pattern, not just a personal struggle.
If you recognize yourself in this, you’re not behind. You’re adapting. And that process is heavier than most people talk about.
So what helps?
Not a checklist. Not a quick fix. But a few things seem to make it lighter.
Talking about it, instead of keeping it in your head.
Realizing you’re not the only one going through this.
Giving yourself more time than you think you should need.
And being around people who understand this experience. That alone can change a lot.
We’re exploring this more at Flux Forward, because it shows up everywhere, even if it stays invisible most of the time.
