From hidden load to clearer next steps
Over the past month, one pattern kept coming back. Many internationals are not simply stuck because they lack motivation, information, or effort. They are carrying invisible pressure while trying to move forward in a system that is hard to read.
They apply, search, ask questions, join events, rewrite their CVs, wait for replies, manage paperwork, try to understand rules, and keep going, but underneath all of that, something else is often happening: “I’m trying to move forward, but I’m carrying too much at the same time.”
What we saw in May In May, we spent more time listening to where people actually get stuck. Not only in job search, paperwork, and networking, but in the space between all of them.
We saw this in conversations around:
the invisible to-dos of life in the Netherlands
feeling stuck after studying in NL
trying to build stability while everything still feels temporary
translating experience into a new labor market
hiring international talent, but not always retaining or activating it well
trying to understand systems that often assume you already know the map
Across these situations, the issue is not always capability. Often, it is hidden load, and hidden load is hard to solve until it becomes visible.
Small rooms, real conversations This month, we opened a few small online conversations for internationals and people working around international talent.
Just finished studying in NL, but still stuck? A conversation for internationals who have finished studying in the Netherlands, but still feel unsure about work, direction, confidence, visa timing, or their next step, because after graduation, being stuck does not always mean you are unprepared. Sometimes it means the next system is unclear.
From Hiring to Retention A conversation on what is missing in international talent strategies in the Netherlands. Hiring is only the beginning.
If people arrive with hidden friction, unclear expectations, unstable foundations, or no real activation path, organizations may lose talent long before that talent has had a fair chance to contribute.

What we shared this month We also published three reflections that connect to the same theme from different angles.
The Hidden Cost of Instability in the Netherlands This piece looks at what happens when internationals have too many open loops, too many backup plans, and too little stability. Sometimes the problem is not that people have too many options. It is that every option feels risky.

Before Integration Comes Grounding This reflection asks a simple question: What if integration is not the first step?
Before someone can fully participate, network, apply, perform, or contribute, they may need enough stability to think clearly and move without constant pressure.
Grounding is not a luxury. It is often the condition that makes activation possible.

AI Is Changing the Learning Ladder at Work This article looks at how AI is changing not only tasks, but also the way people build judgment, trust, visibility, and readiness at work. If the old learning ladder changes, we need to ask a deeper question: How do people become ready when the path to learning is no longer the same?

From more information to orientation Most people try to fix the visible problem. Improve the CV. Apply more. Network more. Explain themselves better. Find one more guide, one more checklist, one more answer.
Sometimes that helps, but often, the first issue is not action. It is orientation. Knowing what is actually blocking movement. Knowing which layer needs attention first. Knowing whether the issue is stability, translation, navigation, visibility, or something else.
More information is not always the answer. Sometimes people need a clearer signal.
What’s coming next In June, we are continuing to build around that signal. Less noise. More useful language. More focused conversations. Clearer next steps for internationals and organizations.
We will keep developing the Activation Scan, the blog, and small formats that help people understand where they are stuck and what kind of support might actually help.
One thought to leave you with If you feel stuck, it does not automatically mean you are doing too little. You may be carrying too much invisible load, or you may be trying to move forward before the ground feels stable enough.
The next step is not always to push harder. Sometimes it is to understand what is really draining your energy. If this feels familiar, you can start here:
